01 / PRODUCT & OWNERSHIP

A full browser
on top of WebView.

Zephyr Browser is a mobile browser built on Android WebView. Besides tabs, history, downloads and a private mode, it can block ads and send traffic through a proxy in a country the user picks. The start page adds browsing stats, local weather and news.

I developed the Android app and took it through Google Play publication. It has passed 10K+ installs.

The screens below are from the current Google Play build, captured on a Pixel 9 Pro XL.

03 / ENGINEERING CONTRIBUTIONS

Routing, filtering,
and the web–native seam.

Most of the work sits below the interface: where the traffic goes, what gets loaded, and how pages talk to the app.

01 / NETWORK ROUTING

Route the WebView, not the device.

Per-country routing uses ProxyController from AndroidX WebKit, which applies a proxy to the app’s own WebViews. The browser needs no VPN service and no device-wide network access, and switching country does not touch other apps.

02 / AD BLOCKING

Filter with a maintained list.

Ad blocking is built on EasyList filter rules. A public, maintained list keeps up with ad networks far better than a hand-written set of domains would.

03 / WEB AND NATIVE

Native features around the page.

Tabs, history, downloads and private mode are native features around the WebView. A JavaScript bridge connects page scripts with the app where the browser needs it.

04 / RELEASE

Ship a browser to Google Play.

I took the app through Google Play review and publication, with subscriptions on Google Play Billing and local pricing. The browser has passed 10K+ installs.

04 / WHAT THIS PROJECT DEMONSTRATES

Android work
below the UI layer.

Zephyr shows how I handle WebView internals: routing app traffic through a proxy, filtering requests, connecting web and native code, and getting a browser through Play review.
